About Staying ConnecTED
In light of this year’s theme, Staying ConnecTED, we are staying connected to various professional fields, such as business, arts & photography, culinary arts, law, military service, technology, and entrepreneurship. TEDxWakeForestU 2024 will showcase 5 different speakers coming from diverse professional backgrounds and life experiences worth sharing. Each speaker has been carefully chosen to cater to the interests of Wake Forest students and the surrounding Winston-Salem community. We aim to provoke thought and create engagement by sharing ideas from individuals who have made groundbreaking strides in their field. Attendees will be given an opportunity to connect to the diverse array of fields and topics discussed from all five speakers. TEDxWakeForestU Staying ConnecTED 2024 is a free event that will be hosted in Wait Chapel on Thursday, February 8th. Make sure to register now with our link in the bio of our Instagram @tedxwakeforestu to save your seat for this Wake tradition!
About TEDxWakeForestU
The TEDxWakeForestU conference was originally started in 2012 by student activist and campus leader, Lucy Lan, in order to promote technology entrepreneurship here on the Wake Forest campus. With this in mind, she was able to bring a multitude of speakers from many disciplines to educate the Wake Forest community. This event was a bigger success than she could have imagined, with over 1,000 attendees and immeasurable impact on the Wake Forest community.
“Many TEDx events are very intimate, limited to 100 people or less under the organization’s rules,” said Lucy Lan, lead Wake Forest student organizer, “Our TEDxWakeForestU event is designed for 1,000 attendees, and TED Fellow Dr. Anthony Atala has thrown his support behind it.”
Dr. Atala’s TEDTalk on printing kidneys in 3-D was named one of the top 10 TEDTalks of 2011 and featured on the Huffington Post among other sites. Dr. Atala is part of the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.
The TEDxWake community seeks to extend the TED experience at a regional level, highlighting exceptional people and creative works, connecting people across disciplines, creating conversations that drive action. We explore big questions with a broad spirit of inquiry.
TED And The TEDx Concept
About TEDx, x = independently organized event
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TED Talks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)
About TED
TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a four-day conference in California 30 years ago, TED has grown to support its mission with multiple initiatives. The two annual TED Conferences invite the world's leading thinkers and doers to speak for 18 minutes or less. Many of these talks are then made available, free, at TED.com. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Sal Khan and Daniel Kahneman.
The annual TED Conference takes place each spring in Vancouver, British Columbia. TED's media initiatives include TED.com, where new TED Talks are posted daily; the Open Translation Project, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as translations from volunteers worldwide; the educational initiative TED-Ed. TED has established the annual TED Prize, where exceptional individuals with a wish to change the world get help translating their wishes into action; TEDx, which supports individuals or groups in hosting local, self- organized TED-style events around the world, and the TED Fellows program, helping world-changing innovators from around the globe to amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities.
